The beautiful villages of Abruzzo: where culture and traditions are a treasure to be guarded carefully.

The Abruzzo's incredible beauty , is represented, not only by its amazing natural environment , but also by the beautiful old villages that recall the Region's history and its ancient culture.

Abruzzo is the second Italian's Region, after Umbria, with the highest number of beautiful old villages  , according to the prestigious club "The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy".

They were built mostly in the Middle Ages, and almost all were built entirely of stone and mortar. After centuries since their construction, a great number of these villages, still retains much of the powerful defensive perimeter walls and ancient doors. Others show a compact mass of houses, walls, with small and narrow windows, similar to slots, which are located only on the upper floors, to make them a formidable defensive wall. Still others are dominated by the imposing castles, or more often, by the evocative ruins of towers, castles and medieval fortresses.

The interior space, characterized by narrow streets, charming alleys, steep stairways and spectacular arches, almost always contains monuments and works of art of immense value, such as churches with frescoes and beautiful altars , wooden ceilings, and beautiful mansions with coats of arms , mullioned windows or mullioned medieval, beautiful carved stone portals that enchant the visitor, beautiful fountains and ancient towers.

Many of these villages were manor in the Middle Ages or Renaissance, of historical and famous dynasties, among which the famous Florentine family the De 'Medici, who had dominion in the IV century in Santo Stefano di Sessanio.
Each of these authentic "gems"  preciously guarded, tells more than any book, the millennial history of Abruzzo and of its strong and gentle people!

It's not simple to describe these amazing villages one by one, as they represent nearly 70% of the region's inhabited areas, but we will try on this page to introduce you at least the ones we consider the most beautiful and interesting one.
